Compatible DVD Media

From Chiip-Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Nintendo Wii is does not work with just any kind of DVD media. This is not really Chiips fault but just a result of Nintendo deciding on specific DVD media they would use to distribute their games and constructing the Wii DVD drive in a way that will make it work with this kind of DVDs - but of course they didn't pay attention to make it very compatible to DVDs that work a bit differently from that. That's why on this page we provide a full list of DVD media that were actually tested with Chiip.

IMPORTANT INFO:
With the version 0.9.1 Chiip should have become compatible to most discs now, even discs that did not work before (especially DVD-RWs). In order to confirm this, it would be awesome if some people could try exactly those DVDs that are NOT marked as "green & working" in the list below, but either as just working with bitsetting or not working. It is very probable that they will all work now, but as I can't possibly get all those DVDs to test them myself, your help is needed!! Further info on how to do that below.

Submitting to the list
If you have tested some DVDs different from those listed here, or tested the same ones on a different drive chip or with a higher burning speed than mentioned, it would be great if you could help us improving this list by sending a small eMail to compatible(AT)trashmail(DOT)net (start the subject with "chiip" or your mail might go to spam). Please include the following info in your mail (failing to do so might just lead to your report being ignored):

  • the name of the DVD
  • type of the DVD (+R, -R, +RW or -RW)
  • maximum speed that it's supposed to work with (this will mostly be written directly on the DVD medium)
  • at which speed you actually tried burning it
  • what drive chip there is inside your Wii (DMS/D2A/D2B)
  • If you can: Please provide the manufacturer ID. Manufacturer IDs are more reliable than the name/brand, as the same discs are often sold under different names/brands. You can read the manufacturer ID (or even better, the unique disc ID) with tools like DVD Identifier or CD-DVD Speed.
  • and of course: did it work or not?

All help is very much appreciated!

Also please use that the compatibility email address is only for providing compatibility info, but NOT to ask general questions about Chiip (those will be ignored)! Because this list is primarily maintained by ZDragon, you will reach him over that email address and NOT Cadex, the creator of Chiip. Cadex can be contacted over chiip(AT)trashmail(DOT)net.

What works and what doesn't

  • Burning DVDs at a high speed can result in errors and the disc might not be readable then, or you might get DREs during the game even. If you want to be safe, burn the disc at 4x only.
  • Rewritable (+/-RW) discs are more likely to fail than write once (+/-R) discs.
  • DVD-R are recommended over DVD+R discs. One reason is that the laser needs more power when using DVD+R media, thereby reducing the laser's lifespan. Another reason is that hardly anyone has ever reported problems with DVD-R media.
  • Starting with v0.9.1 all four types of media (DVD+R/DVD-R/DVD+RW/DVD-RW) should work in general. Before v0.9.1 booktype bitsetting was required for all media but DVD-R; as this wasn't possible for DVD-RW, those discs did not work in older versions of Chiip. Now all should work fine. If you have a DVD-RW at hand, it would be great if you could test it and send me some info on if it worked (see above).

DVD media compatibility list (in alphabetical order)
The speed (e.g. "Working on 4x") only denotes the speed those mediums have been tested with so far, NOT the maximum speed they work at. It would be nice if you could try burning them faster than that and then report if it worked with higher speeds or not (see above). Important: Please note that all entries that were previously marked as "not working" or "working*" have been greyed out, as they reflect the compatibility only for versions earlier than v0.9.1 Please submit new info for them after upgrading your Chiip to v0.9.1 or above!

(*) - these media did either not work at all or only with the bitsetting trick on Chiip version lower than v0.9.1, but they should all work fine now. Still they haven't been confirmed yet. If you have one of those media at hand, please test them and submit some info on if it worked (see above)!!

How to know if your backup image file is okay before you burn it

  • Wii ISOs are exactly 4.699.979.776 bytes. Sometimes Wii ISOs with a size of 4.700.012.544 bytes can be found; they work fine as well.
  • Wii ISOs with 4.736.698.368 bytes are scrambled images. They need to be unscrambled before they can be burned.
  • Gamecube ISOs must be exactly 1,459,978,240 bytes. If you've

Changing the speed of the Wii drive
Chiip now supports the full speed of the Wii's DVD drive, eliminating any kind of problems with choppy videos in WarioWare etc. that could be found in earlier versions. However most games don't even require the full speed - that's why there will soon be a feature in Chiip that will allow both Wii backups and originals to be read at a lower speed, thus reducing the noise while playing. Stay tuned!
